Waterfronts Past and Present – Learning How Engineers Design with Nature

We are pleased to announce our 2026 in-person Great Lakes literacy workshop for educators in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, August 18–19, 2026, two engaging days of learning and collaboration. Participants will work alongside engineers, scientists, environmental planners, and fellow educators to explore coastal engineering education in depth.

The workshop will examine how coastal engineering shapes and strengthens coasts and shorelines, using Milwaukee and its Lake Michigan shoreline as a case study. Participants will also spend time
aboard the R/V Neeskay, gaining a unique, on-the-water perspective on the engineering transformations that have influenced the community. Educators will be introduced to hands-on activities and lessons they can bring back to their students to integrate coastal engineering into their classrooms.
